Bentley Miniature Railway in the grounds of Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum

History of the `Wendy House'

The name Wendy House dates back to the early days of Uckfield Model Railway Club when this trailer was used to move the clubs model railway layouts, and latterly 7 ¼" portable track (which is still used at Brighton Modelworld) around the country to exhibitions and events. It was built with a door at the front and the back wall which hinged to allow easy access. The interior was then decked out with racks to hold the layouts. This worked well for many years, but as time went on more and more was added to the structure which eventually lead to it being too heavy to tow around. At about the same time the club started running a small up-and-down railway at Bentley Wildfowl. As a result the trailer was parked on site as a mobile workshop and has gradually become more permanent over the 15 years it has now been there and the small up-and-down railway has become a ½ mile trip. On Sunday 25th November 2001 we started to dismantle the building, due to the strength of the structure this is turned out to be a feat in itself. Amazingly once all the cladding and superstructure was removed the chassis could be wheeled around by two people - not bad after 15 years standing rusting!
